High Energy Physics & Astrophysics
In high-energy and particle physics, researchers study nature at its most fundamental level, investigating particles that make up both ordinary and exotic forms of matter as well as cosmological phenomena such as dark matter.
The Basque research ecosystem in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics works on the study of extreme phenomena in the universe, combining experimentation, theory and advanced technologies. In particle physics and dark matter, it develops detectors to search for exotic particles and participates in international experiments to understand the nature of dark matter and dark energy. In high-energy astrophysics, sources such as black holes and pulsars are analysed using gamma ray telescopes and theoretical models of particle acceleration.
The Basque Country also contributes to the detection of gravitational waves, exploring black hole and neutron star mergers, as well as developing theoretical models in observational cosmology to understand the evolution of the universe. On the other hand, applications of quantum technologies in high-energy physics are being investigated, from advanced sensors to quantum algorithms for simulations of particle collisions.
