Quantum Communications

Quantum Communications leverage quantum mechanical properties to achieve secure and efficient transmission of information, primarily through quantum cryptography (QKD) and quantum teleportation. These technologies represent a cutting-edge area of research with significant potential for transforming secure communication networks in the future.

The Basque research ecosystem in Quantum Communications is advancing in the development of technologies to guarantee secure networks and establish the basis for a future quantum internet. The main lines of work include Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), developing advanced protocols to protect critical infrastructures against cyber-attacks and exploring integration with post-quantum cryptography. In addition, quantum communication networks are being designed to optimise information transmission using entanglement techniques and secure routing protocols.

Another key area is the development of quantum memories and repeaters, which are fundamental for extending the distance of quantum networks and improving the scalability of secure communication. The Basque Country is also researching quantum satellite communication, integrating terrestrial and space networks to extend the coverage of these technologies. Finally, it is working on interoperability between quantum and classical infrastructures, ensuring a smooth transition towards hybrid communication systems.
